The Government of Haiti has imposed a state of emergency and a curfew due to escalating gang violence and a daring prison break. The nation has been in chaos, prompting fears of widespread unrest and instability and the situation is getting worse with each day. 

History

For years Haiti has witnessed political turmoil and social upheaval. Recent incidents have took this chaos onto the next level. Armed gangs are roaming free and the streets are filled with brazen display of power. The gangs now hold a large part of the country under their control including the capital, Port-au-Prince forcing the government to impose emergency. Even multiple embassies and International Airport are currently surrounded by rival gang territories.


Panicked shootouts between the gangs and police is becoming a new norm on the street. Innocent civilians bear the brunt of this lawlessness, struggling each d ay to protect themselves and their families. The country is witnessing the heartbreak stories of loss, fear, and desperation each day. Women have been subjected to violence and abuse, while young boys are being forced into joining gangs at young ages.

Road ahead for Haiti

There are few sections that have attempted to fight back with an aim to bring back normalcy. The Haitian National Police are being supported by an undercover unit in the fight against the gangs. While right now it’s just Haiti that it is under crisis, the fear that it might soon start affecting the neighboring countries is not far-fetched. Neighboring countries are not distanced from immigration and border security issues.

The international community need to focus on how to support Haiti in its hour of need. The world of Haiti’s citizens are facing some serious issues in the country and at this moment, they are unheard.
