Amid escalating tensions and violent confrontations between Israel and Palestine, Egypt has announced its decision to not accept refugees from Gaza, signaling a significant stance as the Israel-Palestine conflict continues to intensify. This development comes at a time when the possibility of an Israeli ground offensive in Rafa, the southernmost city of Gaza, seems increasingly likely, sparking fears of a large-scale exodus of Palestinians.

Satellite imagery and reports have illuminated Egypt’s preparations for a potential influx of Palestinians by fortifying its border with Gaza. Construction of a substantial wall and the setup of pre-cast barriers along the border road have been documented. This initiative by Cairo aims at creating a high-security, gated, and isolated area adjacent to the besieged strip. The Sinai Foundation for Human Rights, an independent NGO, has highlighted that these measures intend to fortify Egypt’s border against an unforeseen exodus of Palestinians, especially from Rafa.

Despite the significant developments along its border, Egypt has maintained silence over the construction of the wall. However, it has previously articulated concerns about being directly affected by the conflict, especially with warnings that the offensive in Rafa could displace over a million Gazans. This situation poses a complex challenge, not only for Egypt but also for neighboring countries like Jordan, which has similarly voiced fears over the potential spillover of refugees from the West Bank.

Rafa has become a temporary haven for more than 1.5 million Palestinians, who have been displaced due to successive evacuations. These individuals, seeking shelter at the southern tip of Gaza, face an uncertain future as the conflict shows no signs of abating. Israel, on its part, asserts that its military actions aim to target Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, without intending to displace the Gazan population. Israel’s Foreign Minister has assured measures to mitigate harm to Egypt’s interests, with plans being formulated to evacuate civilians to safer parts of the strip, if necessary.

As the situation unfolds, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that can bring an end to the violence and suffering of millions. The Israeli Prime Minister reiterates that the destruction of Hamas’s strongholds in Rafa is essential for a “total victory” over the militant group, further complicating the dire humanitarian situation in the region.
