Cyndi lauper madonna

In the 1980s, the music world pitted rising pop stars Cyndi Lauper and Madonna against each other as dueling divas fight for the spotlight. However, Cyndi Lauper admitted that any notion of a fierce rivalry between the two was very much overblown and it was just fabricated media narrative .

In an interview Courtney Lopez, the iconic “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” singer reflected on those years when she and Madonna were positioned as polar opposites competing for pop supremacy by the press. “Isn’t that sad? There can only be room for one, what the hell was that?” Cyndi Lauper remarked. She is still clearly puzzled by the manufactured feud decades later.

When asked if she ever directly addressed the perceived rivalry with Madonna at the time, Lauper responded bluntly: “Nah, I didn’t think she liked me that much.” The 69-year-old went on to recount one particular style choice from early in her career that she made specifically to differentiate herself from Madonna’s trademark blonde bombshell look.

“See, my hair at that point, Madonna had blonde hair, so I said ‘Okay, duh, I’ll just put a black spot here so they know the difference between the two of us,'” Cyndi Lauper said, referring to her hair’s black roots.

Despite their respective rise to fame happening in parallel, the “True Colors” singer maintained there was no actual animosity or competition between her and Madonna. The media’s constant comparisons and attempt to stoke a non-existent feud seemed to stem from the industries’ outdated mentality.

Media Problem

Of course, both Cyndi Lauper and Madonna would go on to establish themselves as pioneering artists and international superstars in their own right throughout the following decades. Any fabricated rivalry ended up being wholly unnecessary.

Cyndi Lauper’s dismissive comments provide a glimpse into how frustrating it could be for authentic creative talents to have narratives manufactured around them, rather than being allowed to coexist and shine independently. Refusing to buy into the hype, she simply focused on making her own unique mark in music history alongside her fellow artist.
