The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has once again grabbed the world’s attention with an audacious and eye-catching architectural proposal – the Epicon towers planned for the futuristic NEOM mega-city. At the heart of this bold concept are two colossal skyscrapers reaching dizzying heights of 225 and 275 meters, surrounded by…nothing but desert as far as the eye can see.
Prospects for Epicon
The initial renderings of Epicon depict that it will be slender glass-and-steel towers cutting clean lines against the vast sandy expanse. It will only be connected only by precarious-looking stretched canopy structures. It’s an undeniably striking image, these twin giants defiantly jutting out of the barren landscape. But it also raises questions about feasibility and purpose beyond just providing that all-important “wow factor” for Epicon.
According to architecture critique of and reaction videos dissecting the Epicon concept, those dramatically cantilevered connecting elements may end up being too structurally ambitious. More than likely, we’ll see a scaled-back, truncated version span the towers instead. Still impressive from an engineering perspective, but perhaps lacking some of that initial mind-bending visual punch.
Need for Epicon
The bigger question, however, is what exactly this will all be for and whether it risks becoming an isolated architectural folly. Two megatall skyscrapers and…that’s it, at least based on the limited renderings so far. No surrounding cityscape, no contextualizing urban fabric, just naked towers in the middle of the Saudi desert.
Of course, we’re told Epicon represents just one small piece of the much larger, $500 billion vision for the smart city of the future that is NEOM. But if these towers are meant to be icon anchors, surely they’d be depicted with at least some hint of the broader development taking shape around them, right?
Perhaps NEOM’s planners are keeping their powder dry, wanting to reveal future phases more comprehensively down the line. After all, long the oil economy remains Saudi Arabia’s present stock-in-trade, these breathtaking vanity projects – be it the 170km straight skyscraper line or the $1 billion mirrored desert resort – represent their big bets on a tourism-driven future when fossil fuels’ day is done.
Future of Saudi
The Epicon towers could be monumental triumphs showcasing Saudi ingenuity and ambition on a worldwide stage…or they may prove to be fabulously exotic and expensive white elephants if not integrated thoughtfully into a genuine ecosystem of urban dynamism. Only time will tell if this latest centerpiece vision gets fleshed out into something meaningful beyond just shocking renderings of spires in the sand.

For now, like much of the NEOM concept itself, the Epicon towers are a tantalizing architectural mirage shimmering on Saudi Arabia’s desert horizon. Whether that translates into a sustainable oasis of innovation remains to be seen.
