Hamas-Israel Conflict

The Israel-Hamas conflict may feel like a recent happening but it shares a lengthy history. The history is marked by territorial disputes, religious significance, and geopolitical decisions. Let’s look at what all that led to the current war.

The conflict’s origins trace back to the early 20th century. It was a time of Ottoman Empire’s fall that led to British control over what was then known as Palestine. During this period, the region was predominantly Arab, with jews as minority. The aftermath of World War I and II saw significant Jewish migration, partly due to the horrific Holocaust.

The United Nations proposed a plan in 1947 to divide the British-controlled land into separate Jewish and Arab states. Jewish leaders accepted the plan, leading to the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. However, the Arab community rejected this partition, resulting in Israel gaining control over more territory than initially proposed by the UN. This event is referred as Nakba or catastrophe by Palestinians, as it led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian Arabs.

Further tension occurred in 1967 during the Six-Day War, where Israel seized control over additional territories. Those territories were the West Bank from Jordan, the Gaza Strip from Egypt, and the Golan Heights from Syria. These territories have since been at the center of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with the United Nations and various international bodies considering Israel’s occupation as illegal.

In 2005, Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip, a densely populated coastal area. Despite the withdrawal, Israel continues to control its airspace and maritime access. It also controls the movement of goods, leading to a blockade. Notably it has high unemployment and deteriorating health systems.

Israel-Hamas conflict started after late 1980s amidst growing Palestinian frustrations and started a group. They took control of Gaza in 2007. It has a complex identity with both a political arm and a militant wing, the latter responsible for numerous attacks against Israel. Hamas’s stated goal is the destruction of Israel, which has led to its classification as a terrorist organization by numerous countries.

Jerusalem remains the focus point for the Israel-Hamas conflict. The city holds significant religious importance for Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Thus it is a focal point for both Israeli and Palestinian identities. Clashes and tensions in Jerusalem often escalate during major religious holidays.
