Origin of Knights Templar
Originating in the 11th century, the Knights Templar emerged during the series of religious wars between Christians and Muslims. The fight was for the control of holy sites in the Holy Land. Responding to the call by Byzantine Emperor Alexios Komnenos to combat Muslim expansion, European Christians embarked on armed pilgrimages known as the Crusades. The capture of Jerusalem in 1099 marked a significant victory for the Christian forces. Their victory was built on the massacre of Muslims and Jews.
After Crusades
In the aftermath of the Crusades, pilgrims traveling to the Jerusalem faced danger from robbers and hostile forces. In response, a group of French knights led by Hugh de Paynes vowed to protect pilgrims. They established the Poor Knights of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, later known as the Knights Templar. Initially, they were a small group living a monastic lifestyle and focusing on protecting pilgrims.
However, they soon expanded their responsibilities and got involved in military campaigns, building castles, and banking for European nobility. Their growing wealth and power attracted resentment, especially from King Philip IV of France, who saw an opportunity to seize their assets. In 1307, Philip orchestrated a dawn raid, arresting hundreds of Templars on charges of heresy and immorality.
